sometimes it’s the small things
Life can feel overwhelming. Between work, family, health, and the never-ending demands of the world, it’s easy to wonder how we’re supposed to hold it all together. But I’ve found that the answer rarely comes from the “big things.” More often, it comes from the small ones the daily anchors that ground us in the middle of life’s chaos.
For me, it starts with coffee. Not just caffeine, but the ritual: grinding the beans, pouring the hot water, taking that first sip. It’s five minutes of mindfulness that reminds me a new day has begun.
Other days, it’s laughter. The kind that bubbles up unexpectedly when someone tells a story just right, or when you share a look across the room and can’t help but smile. Laughter has a way of reminding us we’re human, that joy can exist even in the hard moments.
These small rituals and reminders aren’t trivial. They’re anchors. They keep us steady when life feels uncertain.
Think about it: big milestones promotions, weddings, even personal breakthroughs don’t happen every day. Most of life happens in the in-between. And it’s in those in-between spaces where the “small things” save us.
Maybe for you, it’s a daily walk. A song that takes you back. A text from a friend at the perfect moment. The smell of rain or the sound of your kids laughing in the next room. These aren’t just background details, they’re threads that hold life together.
I’ve been asked many times how I maintain perspective while living with a disability, medical issues, and facing setbacks along the way. The truth is, I don’t always get it right. But when I do, it’s because I’ve learned to pay attention. To notice the ordinary, to find gratitude in the small things, and to let them remind me that life even when it’s hard is still full of beauty.
So I’ll ask you: what are the small things that save you?
Maybe it’s coffee. Maybe it’s laughter. Maybe it’s something only you know. Whatever it is, honor it. Because those small things? They aren’t small at all. They’re the anchors that bring us back to ourselves, over and over again.
